东京是日本的首都，它位于本州关东平原南端，东南濒临东京湾，通连太平洋。其行政区划为“都”，下辖23个特别区、1郡、26市、7町、8村以及伊豆群岛、小笠原群岛。面积2100多平方公里，人口1200多万。
    东京创建于1457年，古称江户。1868年明治维新后，明治天皇从京都迁都江户，改称东京。东京是日本最大的工业城市，也是日本的商业、金融中心，全国主要的公司都集中于此，工业产值居全国第一位，与横滨、千叶构成日本著名的京滨工业区。东京也是世界上物价水平最高的城市。日本全国的交通网是东京为中心，而许多电车线与地下铁道线又纵横市内，因而外来游客盛赞东京交通的便利与舒适。
     事物纵多新旧之论，然东京却因新旧并存而蔚为大观。高耸入云的大厦之旁，往往有一座古色古香的寺庙。和服赏樱，驱鬼祭祀，古风依然；时尚流行，诸多千奇百怪；异国情调，路人留驻；灯火霓虹，世人买酒买醉；行色匆匆，尽是凡夫俗子；这一切都发生在这个摩登大都市里--东京。
